Books about Schools You Don't Attend

School is in full swing over here in Pearl and we remember from our teen days that the routine of the schoolweek can occasionally be a drag. For a bit of an escape, check out these books about teens in boarding schools that might be a bit different from your school experience:

A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray.

It’s 1895, and after the suicide of her mother, 16-year-old Gemma is shipped off from the life she knows in India, to Spence, a proper boarding school in England. Lonely, guilt-ridden, and prone to visions of the future that have an uncomfortable habit of coming true, Gemma’s reception there is a chilly one. To make things worse, she’s been followed by a mysterious young Indian man, a man sent to watch her. But why? What is her destiny? And what will her entanglement with Spence’s most powerful girls—and their foray into the spiritual world—lead to?

Looking for Alaska by John Green
Miles "Pudge" Halter is abandoning his safe, boring life. Fascinated by the last words of famous people, Pudge leaves for boarding school to seek what a dying Rabelais called the "Great Perhaps." Pudge becomes encircled by friends whose lives are everything but safe and boring. Their nucleus is razor-sharp, sexy, and self-destructive Alaska, who has perfected the arts of pranking and evading school rules. Pudge falls in love with her. When tragedy strikes the close-knit group, though, it is only in coming face-to-face with his problems that Pudge discovers the value of living and loving unconditionally.

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Lissa Dragomir is Moroi princess: a mortal vampire with a girt for harnessing the earth's magic. She must be protected at all times from Strigoi: the fierce vampires who never die. The powerful blend of human and vampire blood that flows through Rose Hathaway, Lissa's best friend, makes her a Dhampir. Rose is dedicated to a dangerous life of protecting Lissa from the Strigoi, who are hell-bent on making Lissa one of them. After two years of freedom, Rose and Lissa are caught and dragged back to St. Vladimir's Academy, a school for vampire royalty and their guardians-to-be, hidden in the deep forests of Montana. But inside the iron gates, life is even more fraught with danger... and the Strigoi are always close by. Rose and Lisssa must navigate their dangerous world, confront the temptations of forbidden love, and never once let their guard dawn, lest the evil undead make Lissa one of them forever.
